The End Is Nigh!

DSCF7671 StitchI don’t like to get involved in the politics of the scene, but I do feel the vibe in Sheffield is really bad at the moment, it saddens me and it’s taking away much of the pleasure I got from my passion. There is far too much hate on individuals when it’s roots are not necessarily graff related. If you don’t like a style, fair enough but to publicly diss and damage individuals work is pointless. Not everybody likes everything, and why should they? Some ‘acclaimed’ photographers started by only photographing the work of one artist, some have stayed like that. For myself, I try to encompass as much of the scene as I can, and yes I get it that it must be frustrating for certain writers and artists that some of the newcomers to the graff photographic community will ignore many quality pieces to get to a piece by a specific person. But I think all this infighting is missing the point. It’s a good thing that there is a wider interest in graffiti/street art, more interest = more public support and more legal spots, good thing, yes? I think so. It has a down side though. I know there are many who believe that real graff should not be on legal walls, I get that too, the problem, as I see it now is that the areas are being blurred. I’m not getting into the bombing aspect, I mean the less legal sites, in derelict buildings etc. are being treated, by some, as in the public domain, they’re not. They were never meant to be mainstream, discovering and accessing these sites was never supposed to be openly discussed on social networks, it kind of defeats the object. I love the work on legal walls, the more the better, I think it looks amazing and it’s great to see more appearing in the city. But I loved the thrill of finding something unexpected or hidden too, I’ve spent hours and in one case months searching online and walking miles to find that special something, now that’s gone, chances are you’ll have seen a photo of a piece by loads of people within hours of it being done, you’ll have to join the queue to access the site and if you’re lucky, you’ll get there just before somebody’s dogged it! In my opinion this is not a good thing, it’s killed the urbex scene and it’s doing the same to graff. I was reading an interview the other week with an american graff photographer,he said much the same thing, it would appear it’s a problem everywhere. What’s the answer? Buggered if I know, all I hope is that some new fad takes over leaving those of us who like to spend our days sniffing paint fumes dodging syringes and standing in pigeon poo to get on with it. I think it will happen, I just hope the scene hasn’t imploded on itself before it does. We have some fantastic writers and artists in Sheffield, the city is becoming renowned for its graffiti and street art nationwide, even worldwide, long may it continue…. please.

So, rant over, good to see Phlegm back in the city with his Urban Foxes.

DSCF7676 Funny Ideers by CoLor, just a little bit festive.DSCF7690Our friends from the North East, have paid a return visit.DSCF7692D7606,with a cheeky little bit of Marilyn.

DSCF7698Trik 9 with 2 of Santas’ little helpers.ThisisSheffieldDSCF7732 DSCF7734 DSCF7745 StitchI can’t really do this wall justice on here, it has to be seen to be believed. ‘This is Sheffield’ the epic collaboration between Mace, Jaer, Gzos and Pawski.DSCF7758Nice to see Ryak coming out to play.DSCF7760Good to see Black out and about too, don’t see too much of his work.DSCF7777I really like this, Jonas x Meth.

Thanks for your support over the last year it’s much appreciated. I hope your 2013 has been better than mine and that your 2014 is better still. Happy New Year!

Buzzing!

DSCF0698A sign we’ve had some decent weather recently, the pace of work in the city has been frenetic. A recent visitor to Sheffield Rateone, brought a cuddly cyclops with him.DSCF0620Boms and CoLor Art produced this clever collaboration that is  even better in the flesh.

DSCF0614I don’t know who, Krutz perhaps? I like the elephant, blue previously, and the character to the left which is from a computer game, or so I’ve been told.

DSCF0702Xhastexo and Bine, both artists developing rapidly at the moment.

DSCF0744Prone, a favourite of mine, the character on the wall and the man himself.

DSCF0738Emit, another artist going up a notch recently, top stuff.

DSCF0612Coloquix is quietly taking over the city peeping ladies and cats are appearing all over the place.

DSCF0741Lone, on it with a passion this year, good to see.

DSCF0496With some regret the graffiti’d buiding on the Moor, and it would appear that all the boards went with it, have been demolished, it’s a pity nobody thought to save them.

DSCF0653But at least there is new Phlegm work still in progress and appearing in the city, we haven’t lost him to the rest of the world just yet.

No Head For Heights

DSCF8445So, after a tip off,  I found myself on a rooftop early one morning before going to work. It’s a pretty good vantage point for the cheeky Narke piece, but imagine my surprise when a security guard arrived to escort me off the roof, I think he thought I was going to jump! To be fair, I was quite happy to see him, I hate heights and was starting to hyperventilate. Still a first though!

DSCF8479Double Bubba!

DSCF8501Dose, lovely letters piece.

DSCF8512Zoo, love the character, especially his little feet!

DSCF8516Xhastexo, missed this little ensemble last time I was here and had to have a return trip.

DSCF8993Phlegm, Tragedy and Comedy, which describes my access to this place, narrowly avoiding tragedy providing huge comedy for my son! This is a place I’d been looking at for a couple of years and was really surprised that this masterpiece was the only piece in here.

DSCF9021A revisit to a place we had been escorted from previously, I liked this a lot.

DSCF9023This was the Rocket01 piece we didn’t get to see on our first visit. Nice to have a more relaxed trip this time and no security guard, although he was a jolly decent chap.

Nearly up to date now, although this keeping up lark is a bit like painting the Forth Bridge, neverending, but I wouldn’t have it any other way

Trying to catch up…

DSCF7937Mr Marz has done some wonderful pieces his characters are amazing, but I think this is my most favourite…

DSCF7950Although I quite like these two too!

DSCF8342Phlegm finished this wonderful piece at the Millennium Galleries.

DSCF8388This fossil fish appeared quite soon after.

DSCF8308Bob has done a piece with a shout to Clem Alice which is good to see.

DSCF8321Spotted a nice little collaboration between CoLor Art and Xhastexo.

DSCF8365Narke x Alude x Atik colourful wall at Devonshire Green.

DSCF8373Teas x Gzos x Kode x Rack x SEN, part of the magnificent collection at the citys’ newest hotspot.

DSCF8380Ryaks cracking contribution at the bottom end of the spot.

DSCF8362And lastly, not graffiti in the strictest sense but a lovely sight to behold nonetheless, The Snog by artist, singer and local hero Pete Mckee.

I’ve seen a real change in the city over the last few months a lot more people seem to be becoming aware of and appreciating the vibrant streets around them. All good 🙂

Where the Wild Things Are

DSCF6186

What a wonderful start to a day, a sight like this, a fantastic collaboration with Color, Boms and Mila K. Sadly Milas’ character had to keep her clothes on due to being near a childrens play centre, not such a bad idea in this cold weather and I don’t think it detracts from the piece at all.

DSCF6177

Bob and Skint, first time working together, will certainly have made one artists day.

DSCF6136

A Phlegm x CoLor collaboration roughly 2 years apart. The Phlegm piece had lost its’ hands under another piece so CoLor attached some new ones.

DSCF6059

I met Foundry Art in Blackpool last year at the Sand Sea and Spray event where I discovered he was a Sheffield lad who had relocated to Brighton, but was set to make a return to the city. Well it took him a while, but he got here in the end, better late than never I suppose. Foundry had some art work in a small exhibition at KIAC recently, which I unfortunately missed but hopefully we’ll be seeing much more of him now.

DSCF6099

10 has hit the ground running this year with the size and style of his pieces, clearly, size matters!

DSCF6101

Ryak, raising his profile, always good to see.

DSCF6062

Must be something in the water, the theme for 2013 definitely seems to be GO LARGE or go home. Large it is then!

Snow Beautiful Snow

DSCF5750

I do like a bit of snow, although I’m heartily sick of it at the moment, but I think it makes this piece by Mila K look fantastic.

DSCF5905

And the bad weather isn’t holding Mr Boms back at all. Hooray to that.

DSCF5775

The Stabby Women by Kid Acne are suffering due to the damp conditions, good to see this one still intact.

DSCF5787

Rain shine or snow, that is a splendid sight!

DSCF5795

Never seem to manage to be the first anymore, the footprints of a graff hunter perhaps?  I do like this little ensemble,Phlegm, Mila and CoLor.

DSCF5791

It looks like this character by Xhastexo is trying to catch snowflakes on his tongue (after consuming copious quantities of Red Stripe, apparently).

So I had a nice little walk and sorted my christmas cards for next year, can we have some better weather now please?

2012 Sheffield Personal Favourites

DSCF2350

When it comes to choosing favourites for Sheffield, I may be foolish, even to try, there are so many. But I thought I’d give it a go anyway and I apologise in advance if I’ve managed to upset anybody, it really wasn’t my intention.

Above is my favourite Rocket01 piece of the year, I do love a bit of nature!

DSCF5761

Favourite Mila K, because I believe this was the first time he did the fully formed ‘Mila’ character in Sheffield.

DSCF2797

Wolf because…………………because he can!

DSCF7680

Fauna Graphic, Crane, because I think it’s lovely.

DSCF0802

Trik9, just awesome, best thing he’s done to date.

DSCF8059

Skint, I love the character and the range of colours he uses, always have.

DSCF5736

Mis Red Art, new to the street scene, force to be reckoned with I think!

DSCF1738

Gzos with a little help from Jaer ‘War of the Words’ a favourite because of the sheer amount of work that went into it. So disappointed I missed out on the ‘pants’ shots though!

DSCF4877

CoLor Art, S1N City, because it’s really good and I don’t want to have sort through the sheer volume of brilliant work by this artist, to have to try and choose another.

DSCF2961

Booms character piece, part of a collaboration with Rocket01. Favourite because, Booms is famous for his letters pieces but this year his characters have been amazing and I just adore this one.

DSCF3610

Earth/mune and Dyson joint favourites because when I first got into this I wasn’t really into letters pieces, because of writers like these, I’m getting into it a lot more. Although my reading skills still need to improve a bit ( a lot!)

DSCF4871

No favourites list of mine would be complete without Phlegm and I chose this as my favourite because when most  people would be suffering from jetlag, after a long haul flight from Sri Lanka, he was out painting boards.

So that’s it 2012 over, New Year just beginning, really looking forward to what lies ahead, whatever it may be. I’m so lucky to live in a city with such a thriving scene, 2013, bring it on! Continue reading
